Can Kanban flow coexist with CMMI-oriented process governance?

Use continuous flow with stronger roles, evidence and improvement controls in Velocize. Understand why a method and a maturity model address different questions.

Flow method and maturity answer different questions: Kanban flow; Process capability; Scoped composition; Governed delivery evidence.

A team should not have to abandon useful flow management when a customer asks for stronger process discipline. Kanban addresses how work flows; CMMI addresses process capability and organizational improvement. Velocize can compose a pull-based operating posture with additional evidence, review and role obligations. The combination needs deliberate scope and interpretation. It does not award a CMMI level, and changing a board to Kanban does not by itself establish an effective process.

01

1. Define flow independently of assurance

Agree the work item, start and finish conditions, flow policies and work-in-progress control. Then identify the obligations that determine whether a result can be accepted. These are related concerns, but a movement across a board column is not automatically a formal approval.

Velocize’s Kanban Flow posture can support continuous movement with explicit role and validation responsibilities. A higher-assurance context adds relevant controls without changing the underlying identity of the requirement, decision or evidence.

02

2. Add owned review and evidence obligations

A customer integration may require a reviewed architecture, applicable verification and explicit acceptance. Connect these to the work item rather than creating a parallel compliance task list that no longer reflects the actual delivery.

Velocize’s High Assurance profile and standards overlays can organize those duties. The responsible team interprets the applicable CMMI scope and evidence needs. The tool preserves the links and review state; competent appraisal remains a separate activity.

03

3. Distinguish useful measures

Flow measures and quantitative process-management claims are not interchangeable. Define the population, event meanings and operating context before comparing results. A changed workflow or mixed work types can alter what a trend means.

Velocize provides the linked records needed to inspect context. Specialists decide the measurement method and whether the observations support the intended conclusion. A completion chart does not establish statistical control or a maturity rating.

04

4. Keep AI inside the selected posture

AI may help triage incoming work, identify blockers or prepare review material. It must not bypass a required validation because the queue is busy. Flow optimization remains constrained by human-owned priorities and the applicable acceptance rules.

Velocize assigns AI orchestration, assistance or review by role and stage. When the proposed action exceeds its authority, escalation preserves the decision instead of allowing a model to optimize away the control.

05

5. Follow one change through both perspectives

Select a customer requirement change. Observe its flow, assigned owners, affected architecture, verification and final disposition. Then ask what the same records demonstrate about the selected process-improvement scope and what additional assessment explanation is required.

This is Velocize’s contribution: shared operating records with context-sensitive controls. The team retains continuous flow while adding assurance where needed. Human interpretation and appraisal are preserved, and the project does not need a second disconnected history.
